Raised in the Big Easy, New Orleans, Frank Hoffman discovered his first subject through his father, a horse racer. Being close to these magnificent animals allowed him to draw and paint them with ease. In Chicago, Hoffman became an illustrator and art director at the Chicago American newspaper. Upon the onset of World War I, he tried to enlist but poor eyesight kept him from service. He went to Glacier National Park to serve as the park’s public relations director, and then finally to his Hobby Horse Ranch in Taos, New Mexico. It was in Taos, surrounded by animals, where Hoffman made his best work.
