Fremont Ellis was born and died in Virginia City, Montana, and yet he is most known for his landscape paintings of Northern New Mexico. The impressionist painter was enraptured with art after receiving a set of paints for his 10th birthday. Except for three months at the Art Students League, he was entirely self-taught. In 1921, Ellis formed Los Cinco Pintores with fellow painters Will Shuster, Walter Mruk, Jozef Bakos and Willard Nash. The group only lasted five years, but its influence on modernism in the Southwest is immense.
