Most of his work featured cowboys, cattle and horses, and yet G. Harvey frequently made excursions to major cities, where he allowed his mind (and brush) to be transported back to the late 19th century, when the streets were still filled with horse-drawn carriages and lit with gas lampposts. Recurring destinations from his paintings include Boston; Washington, D.C.; and, most frequently, New York City. No matter where the painting was set, Harvey’s goal was to transport viewers to a place and an emotion. “G. Harvey says his God-given talent would be wasted if he didn’t use it to convey the value system that sustains him. When he puts his brush to canvas, he is communicating feelings, emotions and moods that are the results of his appreciation for God’s order and creation,” writes Randy Best in G. Harvey: The Golden Era — The American Dream. ”A grandfather taking his grandchildren for a wagon ride, a family buying roasted chestnuts from a street vendor, and a jittery young cowboy courting his girlfriend—these are the warm images that touch a responsive chord deep within those who gaze at a G. Harvey painting.”
