Painted with large, sumptuous strokes, Laverne Nelson Black’s Autumn at Taos Pueblo is indicative of the kind of work the artist was known for in Northern New Mexico starting in 1925. His initial trips to the West from Chicago were for his health, which needed warm, dry air. Once in Taos, he fell in love with the people and atmosphere. Later, during the Great Depression, he moved to Phoenix and made murals with Oscar E. Berninghaus.
