Widely known inside and outside the West for her work as a printmaker, Gene Kloss began her career learning etching at the University of California, Berkeley, in the 1920s. In 1925, she moved to Taos, New Mexico, which was still teeming with creative people of all types, including the Taos Society of Artists. She was drawn to Northern New Mexico because of the light and landscape, but also because of the people and architecture, all of which are prominent subjects in her prints and paintings. While her etchings are widely collected, her oils and watercolors are rare gems.
