Nicolai Fechin believed in the power and beauty within objects, which is evident in his floral paintings. Like his portraits, Fechin painted objects with loose, evocative brushstrokes that danced freely on the surface of the painting. Recurring still life subjects included fruits, pueblo carvings and various pots and pitchers, although flowers were his most frequent subjects.

When Fechin arrived in New Mexico, by invitation from Mabel Dodge Luhan, he acquired a home in Taos for his wife and daughter. After moving in, the family determined the house was not to their liking, so Fechin began a long and arduous renovation and expansion. The project took five years and included the latest amenities, including the first electric stove, oven and refrigerator in Taos. Fechin also carved custom features throughout the two-story residence, as well as created ingenious storage spaces in nearly every room. The iconic Taos home, which is now the Taos Art Museum, is a love letter to the beauty of objects in the Southwest.
