Wilson Hurley painted objects as small as flowers in pueblo pots and as grand as the Horsehead Nebula 1,500 light years from Earth. Out on the Llano Estacado fits neatly somewhere between the two. The Llano Estacado is a 3,000-foot mesa located in eastern New Mexico and northwestern Texas. The work was completed in 1997, one year after Hurley delivered the final monumental suite of paintings for the ballroom at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
