Few artists working in the West had methods as unique and unmistakable as R. Brownell McGrew. The Arizona painter mixed his colors with linseed oil to achieve a wet-style look that allowed him to heighten contrast, luminosity and vibrance. The method allowed him to pull detail out of jet-black shadows, while also creating moody contrasts between light and dark. While this process is best viewed in his portraits, elements of it can be seen here in Navajos on the Way to the Branding, which features a red-rock mountain dappled with brilliant light and shadow.
