This classic Carl Rungius drypoint etching was first issued as a print in November 1925. Fourteen months later it appeared in the January 30, 1927, edition of the New York Herald Post. “In the [image], one is confronted by the piercing gaze of a standing bull moose visiting a pond in the early morning as the mist evaporates signaling the light of day,” writes Donald E. Crouch in Carl Rungius: The Complete Prints. “Rungius suggested heavy mist by leaving the base forms of distant trees undefined, and by isolating the moose in the center, etched in the strong contrast of early morning sunlight and deep shadow…The more you look at this print the more you can see little hints, hints that suggest the time of day, light of day, even the season of the year.”
