Created after a trip to Málaga, Spain, this work shows how Clark Hulings could find beauty in neighborhoods of all kinds. “My social conscience was pricked by the poverty of the place but I soon became caught up with the intrinsic beauty of the scene,” the artist wrote about Málaga in Hulings: A Gallery of Paintings by Clark Hulings. “…People with scant means had surrounded themselves with what little beauty they could muster. Málaga is not a tourist city with the attractions of Granada and Seville. Many people think of it only as a transit point to Torremolinos and Mar-bella, the beach paradises. But there is beauty there waiting to be discovered.”
