Widely considered to be among the greatest American landscape painters, Albert Bierstadt was not born in the United States but in Germany. His family sailed to Massachusetts when he was still an infant, but he returned to Germany in his twenties to study at the Royal Academy in Berlin. Back in America, he turned his attention to the frontier and its vast untapped beauty. His work, much of which heightened the drama and romance of the landscape and light, was later linked to the origins of the National Park Service. While much of his work was grand in scale, he also frequently painted more intimate landscape scenes, as seen in Forest Pool in Autumn.
