Additional Information

The Empire State Building towers in the orange haze on this winter evening, so we know we’re looking at a New York City scene sometime after 1931. From 5th Avenue, because the Empire State Building is on the right, we appear to be looking downtown from somewhere near the New York Public Library. The clock, one of many similar elegant clocks in Manhattan, tells us that it’s just past 4:30, early dusk, December perhaps. Families of tourists and residents, kids with their mothers, workers headed home, create the bustle of the afternoon rush. The carriage drivers wait for fares. In Harvey’s Evening on the Avenue-New York, 5th Avenue, it’s a pretty evening for hiring a carriage and taking a ride past all the lit up shops and restaurants, a pretty evening for people watching, which is exactly what we are doing when we look at this painting.
