Additional Information

Despite the rain, the umbrellas, and the early streetlights, the moodiness of City Showers-Boston is tempered by the mirror brightness of the reflections, by the colors of the umbrellas (Anyone remember the film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg?) and carriages, and by the spring green of the buds and small leaves on the trees. What’s interesting is that it’s difficult, perhaps impossible to know when this scene takes place. It could be any spring day in Boston from, say, 1850 to the present. The coachmen in their tall top hats and long dusters are as they have long been. The carriages are identically fashioned and the spire of the church in the fog testifies to time, history, and faith. This is Harvey’s aim, as always, to paint the pastness of the present and the enduring presence of the past.
