Bulldogging is classic LeRoy Neiman: pure paint, loose brushwork, bold and bright color. During his heyday, which largely ran from the 1950s to 1990s (and beyond), Neiman was an unstoppable force in illustration. His work was made famous in the pages of Playboy, where Neiman painted Femlin, a curvaceous nude brunette who appeared opposite the magazine’s jokes page. Neiman’s later work included film, television and sports of nearly every variety, including close associations with the Olympics and the Super Bowl. He also painted portraits of Muhammad Ali, Joe Namath, Leonard Bernstein, ballet dancer Suzanne Farrell and Sylvester Stallone, who gave the artist cameos in three Rocky films.
