John Clymer painted historical paintings in a traditional style, and yet there are modern design elements at play in many of his works, including here in Black Bear. Key to the painting is the upstaging of the wildlife subject by the glacial valley that twists and turns under brilliant light in the far background. Clymer was a master at composition, which shows in his 80-plus Saturday Evening Post covers and his later Western work.
