Luiseño painter Fritz Scholder worked on the leading edge of contemporary Western art, which occasionally put him at odds with more traditional styles. Never has that been more apparent than here with American Businessman, an audacious image of a suited figure in a Christ-like pose. Scholder didn’t invent modernism in the West, but he certainly pushed it further than others, and did so with artwork that explored the people and traditions that were then, and still today, iconic pieces of the American West.
