Known for his authentic portrayals of Native American subjects, Roy Andersen honed his skills as an illustrator in New York and Chicago in the 1970s and 1980s. His illustration went far and wide, including to Time, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, stamps for the United States Postal Service and, famously, the poster for Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales. After a trip West, where he was transfixed by the light of the desert, Andersen moved to Arizona. He primarily, with some exception, worked in two styles: portraits with impressionistic, loosely painted backgrounds and, seen here in The Alien Lance, outdoor scenes with intriguing narrative and grand landscapes.
