Painted in 1904, Thomas Moran’s Teoloyucan, Mexico came from reference material gathered during a trip to Mexico in April and May of 1903. Teoloyucan is a small village north of Mexico City. A graphite sketch of this painting—missing the large tree and instead focusing on the church and stone bridge—can be seen in Thomas Moran: The Field Sketches, 1856-1923. The artist first ventured to Mexico in 1882 at the bequest of the Mexican National Railroad.
