Guns at the ready, a tense situation is primed to explode in Kenneth Riley’s On Foot, showing soldiers and Native American riders unexpectedly meeting on a hilltop. The artist was no stranger to violent confrontations after serving in World War II as a combat artist in the South Pacific, where he witnessed three separate beach invasions. After the war, Riley was an illustrator and an art teacher before settling in Tucson, Arizona, in 1971. In Southern Arizona, he connected with some old illustrator friends, including Howard Terpning and Bob Kuhn, to start the informal art group The Tucson 7.
