Let us set an auction record for you

Ed Mell’s connection to the Scottsdale Art Auction goes well beyond the results and records the venerable auction house has achieved for his now-iconic paintings and sculptures over the years. The relationship actually began early on, when Ed became a regular at the evening open house that precedes the auction. He loved coming by, talking with collectors and clients who were in town for the event, and catching up with old friends. Over the years, Ed even consigned several of his own paintings to the auction.

Ed is one of the most iconic Arizona artists of the last fifty years, while the Scottsdale Art Auction quickly became a destination for serious collectors of both historic and contemporary Western art. The auction has now been named Best of the West Art Auction by True West Magazine four years in a row.

The signature event of the Scottsdale Art Auction is its April live auction, typically held before a packed house of collectors and Western art insiders. At the April 2026 auction, they set a new world auction record for Ed when his painting Guardo Expanse (30 x 60 inches) sold for $132,000, nearly three times its low estimate.

His second-highest auction result came the year before, when Western Bronc (24 x 18 inches) crossed the block during Session II of the April auction. After spirited bidding in the room and on the phones, the painting sold for $122,850—an extraordinary $284 per square inch. Earlier in that same sale, Eye of the Storm (42 x 48 inches) brought $117,000, now the third-highest auction result for an Ed Mell painting.

Collectors also love Ed’s iconic floral paintings. His roses are particularly rare as he often reserved them for friends or special commissions. One exceptional example, Peach Rose (30 x 36 inches), came to Scottsdale Art Auction in 2026 and sold for $108,000, the second-highest auction result ever achieved for an Ed Mell floral.

In fact, six of the ten highest prices ever paid for an Ed Mell painting at auction have been achieved at Scottsdale Art Auction.

That is something Ed would have been quite proud of.
