Robert (Shoofly) Shufelt is an American cowboy artist known for his realistic pencil drawings of contemporary Western culture. Born on February 16, 1935, in Champaign, IL, Shufelt studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois and spent the early part of his career as an illustrator. Shufelt moved to Arizona with his wife and was impacted by the life of the working cowboy and decided to use his drawings to tell their stories. “My goal has always been that my drawings will continue to grow in stature,” he has said, “illustrating a cowboy legacy long after I am gone.” He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2010 Artist of the Year from the Tucson’s Friends of Western Art organization, and has been exhibited at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Albuquerque Museum, among others. Shufelt lives and works in Wickenburg, AZ.
The foreman of the cattle ranch at which Bob worked is seen sitting on his horse, Ol' Buzzard, overseeing the "mothering up" of the newly branded calves with their mothers immediately after being branded. In the background can be seen the two stud bulls that sired the calves. The way Bob described to me this process of "mothering up" was to bring the newly branded calves into a large, corralled area with their mothers and let each mother find their calf while not allowing a calf that was not theirs nurse from them.
