Additional Information

Watcher of the Plains depicts a Piegan scout, sitting on an overlook, quietly surveying the territory below and around him. He might be the leader of the party or simply part of the vanguard of a raiding party. His hand is on his flintlock, ready to fire a warning shot or to defend himself. The stillness in his body is intense. The model for Watcher of the Plains, as Stewart suggests, may have been “White Quiver, a Piegan warrior of rare sagacity and daring,” (p. 337) Prominent New Mexico rancher Albert K. Mitchell, who once owned this work, donated the bulk of his splendid collection to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.
