Lon Megargee’s work is exceptionally varied: from portraits and action scenes to surrealist Western fantasies and modernist visions of the desert. Like his paintings, Megargee can be hard to put in a single box. The Philadelphia-born artist ran away from home at the age of 13 years old and then worked a wide range of odd jobs: roper in a Wild West show, ranch owner, fireman, police captain, poker dealer and cowboy. Megargee was also known to tell some tall tales in his day, so the truth about the artist can be hard to authenticate. Today he’s something of an Arizona folk hero, whose art and exploits have colored the West in fascinating ways.
