Oleg Stavrowsky was born in New York City and was drafted into the Army during World War II, He served in Europe and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1949. He worked as an illustrator especially in the aircraft and fashion industries. In the late 1960s, Stavrowsky visited Oklahoma City and found his way to the Cowboy Hall of Fame, now called the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and later wrote,” I liked what I saw and made up my mind that I’d like to give that a try. I guess we all like Cowboys and Indians.” Stavrowsky’s subjects range from Western art to Native Americans, jazz musicians, automobiles, oil-drill paintings and even abstracts. He passed away at home in Cedar Park, Texas in May of 2020.
