Additional Information

In 1926, W. R. Leigh, seized on an opportunity to accompany Carl Akeley to Africa to collect specimens and material for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Leigh recorded his trip in images and words in his landmark book, Frontiers of Enchantment: An Artist’s Adventures in Africa and would furnish the murals and dioramas for the magnificent Hall of African Animals at the AMNH. Rocky Outcropping on the Plains of Tanganyika appears to be a study for the AMNH Baboon diorama. The shape of the rocks recalls other paintings by Leigh, titled Baboon Rocks-Tanganyika while the light in this painting echoes the light painted on the burlap and plaster rocks in the diorama itself.
