Additional Information

Though Ray Swanson may be best known for his interpretations of Navajo and Pueblo Indian life, he occasionally dipped his brush into the rich palette of cowboy life. In Movin’ the Longhorns, Swanson paints his take on the time honored tradition of the roundup of classic longhorn beef cattle. In his paint handling, and in some of the more modern clothing and gear, he makes it clear that this is a contemporary scene. But if you were there and closed your eyes or just squinted, you’d find yourself back a century or more. This, then, is a continuity picture, meant to depict the present while evoking the past, meant to connect present and past in an unbroken lariat.
