Additional Information

Raphael Lillywhite, named for the great Italian Renaissance painter, was one of fifteen children born to parents who ran a trading post along the Little Colorado River. Lillywhite did indeed show a flair for art and received training at a number of schools as well as alongside some of the Taos Founders. He married the Hungarian portrait painter Ilka DeSzaak—who helped him with his figure work—and his loose, luminous scenes of southwestern life began to find an audience. Lillywhite also worked as a muralist and his Alaska Tundra and Bering Strait can be seen at the Museum of Natural History in Denver.
