Harvey Otis Young beacame an important figure in early Colorado art. Born in Vermont, Young went to California during the gold rush, served in the Civil War, and studied in Europe. Afterwards, he divided his time between mining and painting, but found painting somewhat steadier in terms of income. With Charles Partridge Adams and others, Young founded the Artists Club in Denver—which evolved into the Denver Art Museum, one of the nation’s top cultural institutions.
