An important Cincinnati artist, friend and contemporary of Henry Farny, John Hauser studied in Munich, Dusseldorf and Paris, developing a realism that combines careful rendering with rich color. In 1901, Hauser’s time among the Sioux earned him adoption into their nation, where he was given the name “Straight White Shield.”
