Additional Information

James Boren, the first art director of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, used his daily contact with artists as ad hoc schooling for his own art. Meeting and talking with artists he admired advanced the aims of the Cowboy Hall while allowing him to absorb the lessons of his peers in his own work. Boren favored masters like Russell and Fechin, combining the former’s “easy realism” with the latter’s “great luminosity and vitality of color.” (Krakel, James Boren, p. 42). Hill Country Cow Punchers has everything you could want in a Boren: cowboys jawing; an old stone shack; big sky and distance; and bluebonnets.
