Additional Information

Ostensibly painted in 1919, Indian Encampment in Spring hearkens back to Sharp’s years in Montana. In the work, Sharp deftly layers an impasto of bright green over and around patches of mud growing pale in the strong sun. As one Indian and child take the air, sitting outside their tipi, another woman, her child on her back, stroll over to them. Above, the wind blows the clouds away, revealing a pale blue, spring sky. In the foreground, the eroded bank suggests that snowmelt from on high might fill this wash with life giving water.
