A chocolatey, rusty reddish brown on the looming canyon wall dominates the right side of In the Shadows of the Canyon. It’s a confectioner’s color, shaded from bottom to top, implying an essential beauty in the simplified forms of the world of the Navajo. Delano wants us to see beneath the surfaces, beneath the complexities of human character and the natural world, to note, notice and take away the blurred geometry of the brush, the forms of the bluffs at left, the curve of the cloud and how they all merge into a unified landscape that the Navajo family moves through with ease and a sense of profound belonging.
