In 1911, the year On the Rim, Grand Canyon was painted, F. Luis Mora traveled to California for his father’s funeral. On his way back, Mora stopped to marvel at the scenery and sketch. In On the Rim, Grand Canyon, two Native Americans—Navajo, presumably—stop to admire the view. Mora studied in Boston under Frank Benson, finished his studies in Spain and was the first Hispanic American elected to the National Academy of Design.
