What is a Monotype?
Oscar E. Berninghaus: Master Painter of American Indians and the Frontier West, by Gordon E. Sanders, Taos
“Berninghaus enjoyed working with monotypes, a very difficult and surprising task. For a monotype (one print), he used a glass surface, onto which he painted the scene in oil. Then, before the paint had time to dry, he would overlay the painted glass surface with the receiving paper and press lightly with a roller. The real skill required for the monotype is in removing the paper without any lateral movement, which if done incorrectly will result in a blurred image.”
