Cowboys ambushed, mountain men ambushed, Native Americans ambushed: white men vs. Indians; Indians vs. whites; desperadoes vs. posses; tribe vs. tribe. The ambushers and the ambushed. For an artist, the opportunities are immense—and intense. Delano’s addition to the canon is all action. two pairs of mounted warriors race ahead, fire behind, look for— hope for— some sort of cover. Delano’s high key palette serves his subject well here, allowing him to make highlights on the rocks, horses, and skin glow with the energy of the moment.
