About Ernest Blumenschein

Ernest Leonard Blumenschein (1874–1960) was an American painter celebrated for his vivid portrayals of the American Southwest. Born in Pittsburgh and raised in Dayton, Ohio, he studied at the Art Students League in New York and later at Paris’s Académie Julian. A broken wagon wheel during a western expedition led him to Taos, New Mexico, where he began painting the landscapes and Native communities that would ultimately define his career.

Blumenschein co-founded the Taos Society of Artists in 1915, helping establish Taos as a major center for American art. His works captured the unique light, culture, and landscapes of the Southwest and remain highly sought after by collectors today. Consigning your Blumenschein painting with Scottsdale Art Auction ensures it reaches buyers who understand this, and who value both its artistic mastery as well as it’s cultural significance.
