Clark Hulings is a Western artist whose style transcends the traditional boundaries of Western Art. Feeding the Chickens is a perfect example of what Hulings is best known for—genre scene depicting everyday life on farms and small towns in rural America. Having spent much of his childhood in Spain, Hulings was influenced by its rich culture and vibrant images. Hulings pursued a degree in physics and moved to New Mexico to work for the Manhattan Project. His poor health kept him from taking the job, but the brilliant New Mexico light made a lasting impact on the artist. Returning to New York, Hulings went on to a career in illustration and eventually returned to Santa Fe to paint full-time.
