John Nieto (1936-2018) is a contemporary artist known for his depictions of Native American warriors, fancy dancers, chiefs, potters, weavers, beadmakers, and southwestern wildlife, all done in his signature bold expressive color. Nieto’s style is based on his desire to show a sensitivity and respect to his subject matter. “I employ a subject matter that is familiar and express it the way I see it, with vibrant color and assertive line,” he once said.
Nieto participated in an exhibit at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and afterward presented President Reagan with the painting Delegate to the White House in the Oval Office. The painting hung in Washington for the entirety of Reagan’s term in office and now can be seen in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. During his lifetime, he exhibited works overseas, including Paris and Tokyo, but always returned to his native home of New Mexico where his family had deep roots in the region. The Custer Suite’ each is a portrait of one of the principal participants in the battle of the Little Bighorn.
