In addition to his many paintings of the Sierras and Tetons—including this work, The Cathedral Group, of the highest of the Tetons’ peaks—West Coast painter Leland Curtis was also a great traveler and served as official artist to the United States Antarctica Expeditions in 1939-40 and in 1957. Curtis’s landscapes embrace the topography and geology of the peaks he paints, but they transcend the purely cartographic and convey the majesty and mystery of some of the Earth’s great places.
