The Next Generation of Western Artists

Artist Feature

(Shown Above) Logan Maxwell Hagege (b.1980) – Wherever the Wind Might Go – 40″ x 60″ Oil – Estimate: $60,000 – 90,000

Even within the next generation of artists of the American West, there are elder statesmen. Bill Anton, Z.S. Liang, and Martin Grelle, to name three, hearken back in form and style to their immediate forbears: Jim Reynolds, Ken Riley, and Howard Terpning.

Heroic realism, attention to detail but with an impressionistic freedom, these three painters and their contemporaries sit firmly in the grand tradition of American Western Art. Superb examples of all three artist’s works will be offered at the 2020 Scottsdale Art Auction.

And then there are the young guns, among whom Kyle Polzin, Logan Hagege, Mark Maggiori, Russell Case and Glenn Dean stand out.

Taking the Western still life to new heights of drama and detail, Kyle Polzin paints spurs and saddles, footballs and fiddles, headdresses and horns, as if they have personalities, as if they are, in fact, living beings. You might say Polzin is a kind of latter-day Andrew Wyeth, whose “portraits” often portray the objects that define the sitter’s life and work.

In Logan Hagege’s expansive art, elements of Maynard Dixon, E.M. Hennings, Art Deco style, and the mural tradition of Diego Rivera combine in utterly new forms, conveying the cloudforms and mesas of the West and the timeless movements of the first Americans across this landscape.

Mark Maggiori is the new painter of the desert sunset, a student of color and light, wide skies and mountainous clouds. Maggiori writes that he spends the hour just before dark “staring at the clouds or just at the incredible pinks.” How the light reflects off cumulus clouds piled high at dusk and how that light falls on brush, pony, and rider is Maggiori’s subject; he has rapidly made Arizona’s magic hour his own special province.
